![]() ![]() ![]() While fans of Genet’s original will likely be disappointed, Lambert has unleashed his own strange beast. The writing is strong, though the author threatens to sink the ship with an increasingly fragmented structure and an uneven tone, vacillating from graphic sex to quotidian tedium to political screeds. In Querelle, the last of Genets brilliant quasi-autobiographical fantasies, originally published in France in 1953, were offered a Handsome Sailor whose virility and beauty are ''enhanced'' through murders: one that he himself commits, another that he aids, a third that he arranges. The fuguelike narrative swells to include sections introducing a union buster known as the Hulk as well as the author himself, who, perhaps with a bit of sarcasm, claims to hold a “clear-cut position in support of the employers” as the story builds toward a violent showdown. In addition, three gay teens perform explicit sexual and criminal acts including necrophilia, featured in Dennis Cooperish sequences. ![]() ![]() ![]() One staff member approached us multiple times to share anecdotes relating to Oak Ridge, which was nice and unexpected! The staff at the museum seemed very friendly and knowledgeable, with some members being long-term residents and/or employees in Oak Ridge with firsthand experience related to the exhibits in the museum. It seems like it would make more sense to have more interactive, kid-friendly displays throughout, rather than packed in the back of the museum. The back half features many interactive displays obviously geared towards children. The front half of the museum is very wordy, mature, and packed with information. It's also hard to tell what age group this museum is catering to. I never had the chance to visit the museum in its previous location, however I can reinforce previous reviews that say this museum is very small. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Now for the first time in English Introduction to Magic collects the rites, practices, and knowledge of the UR group for the use of aspiring mages. Townsend also continues to nuance her character here, both of Morrigan and of Wunsoc as a whole. The second book, Wundersmith, is also amazing, and I called it “close to sheer perfection” in my review. Nevermoor is such a sweepingly imaginative story that I’ve been nervous ever since that the rest of the series won’t hold up, but Townsend hasn’t disappointed me yet. This novel revels in its archetypes, but where a lesser writer would turn a novel like this into an exercise in going through the motions, Cooper weaves a gripping and dreamlike story that reminds us exactly why archetypes have the power they do. Readers today will instantly recognize all of the mythic tropes Susan Cooper brings to bear in this tale.
